Hailsham Historical and Natural History Society

The Hailsham Historical and Natural History Society, founded in 1961, has an active programme of meetings and events throughout the year.

Covid 19

Unfortunately the Society is unable to meet at present, as the Charles Hunt Centre is still closed, with no reopening date planned under current Government advice. It would obviously not be easy for us to conform with social distancing guidelines in that environment, and all meetings are cancelled for the foreseeable future.

It is also very difficult for us to reopen our Museum Heritage Centre in Market Street for the same reasons, due to the size and layout of the building. In addition of course, many of our members, who are also custodians, are in the vulnerable category for Covid19. Therefore our position is that we have no plans to re-open the Museum or to restart our monthly meetings at present. We will be reviewing the situation on a regular basis and we have already contacted our speakers to try and rearrange their talks for a future date.

We will continue to respond to email enquiries and answer as many questions as possible, but we do not have access to the records in the Museum at present.

All meetings are open to the public and take place monthly on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm in the Charles Hunt Centre, Vicarage Field, Hailsham, BN27 1BG.

Visitors are always welcome - entrance fee £2.50. (Members free).

VE Day memories

On the 75th anniversary of VE Day, Richard Goldsmith of Hailsham Historical Society chatted with Simon Herbert of Hailsham FM about wartime Hailsham, with memories of the day from local people who were there, as well as press reports from the time.

If this interview has stirred any memories about VE Day in Hailsham, Hellingly or the local area we would love to hear from you. If you have any photographs of the day, we would love to see them and take copies for the museum. You can get in touch at info@hailshamhistoricalsociety.co.uk or telephone Richard on 01323 843102.
