Hailsham Historical and Natural History Society

The Hailsham Historical and Natural History Society, founded in 1961, has an active programme of meetings and events throughout the year.

Hailsham Heritage Centre

Coronavirus (16th March 2020)

In view of the advice issued by the Government about limiting gatherings and visiting crowded places, especially for the elderly and those people with serious health conditions, the Hailsham Historical & Natural History Society has taken the decision to cancel its next three meetings, ie April 1st, May 6th and June 3rd 2020.

We will be reviewing the situation on a regular basis and will advise members and potential visitors of our plans for the July 1st meeting and beyond. We will be contacting our speakers to try and rearrange their talks for a future date if possible.

We are unable to reopen the Heritage Centre Museum at the present time. Access to the museum archives is also not possible, but we are continuing to have snippets posted in the local newspapers and the What's on in Hailsham Facebook page, courtesy of Jenny Seale and we will always respond to emails and answer as many questions as possible. Our grateful thanks to Jenny.

(Please note change of speakers for April and September).

All meetings are open to the public and take place monthly on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm in the Charles Hunt Centre, Vicarage Field, Hailsham, BN27 1BG.

Visitors are always welcome - entrance fee £2.50. (Members free).

VE Day memories

On the 75th anniversary of VE Day, Richard Goldsmith of Hailsham Historical Society chatted with Simon Herbert of Hailsham FM about wartime Hailsham, with memories of the day from local people who were there, as well as press reports from the time.

If this interview has stirred any memories about VE Day in Hailsham, Hellingly or the local area we would love to hear from you. If you have any photographs of the day, we would love to see them and take copies for the museum. You can get in touch at info@hailshamhistoricalsociety.co.uk or telephone Richard on 01323 843102.
